Five Things

Hello! Happy Friday!

I have to confess, I feel like I’m limping toward the weekend this week. I’m so tired. I think it’s a combination of the heat (we’ve been in the 90s already!) and a full calendar of activities. I’m REALLY looking forward to a mostly unscheduled weekend. Here are a few things on my mind this week.

1. Christmas cards. Yep. It’s true. I finally took down my Christmas cards this week. I posted on Facebook that the moment I did it, the kids revolted and thought it was way too soon. What?! Luckily, friends chimed in that they still had theirs up or had just taken them down this week, so I felt better. I like to put them on a binder ring so I can look through them over and over again. What about you – do you keep them up all year (something I seriously considered) or do you have a creative way of using them after the holidays have passed?

2. Museum of Failure. A few weeks ago, when my father-in-law was here, he told us the story of how Kodak missed the boat on digital photography. Just a few days later, I came across the Museum of Failure, which included Kodak as well as other companies and ideas that just didn’t work. So fascinating. (via Jocelyn K. Glei)


3. A Very Easy Dinner Party. I loved this. Because what’s most important is the connecting, not the dinner.

What are you up to this weekend? I say we are “mostly unscheduled”, but we have a couple of baseball games and some fun outings with friends, and I’m “scheduling” some creative time, too. Our temperatures will be dipping back down, for which I am super thankful. Hope your weekend is full of friendship, learning opportunities, and connecting with others in ways that make life richer. Hello! Happy Friday!

We made it! It’s been a busy week. At one point, I had four emails and three calendars open at once, trying to figure out all that we have going on these days. It’s a lot. As someone who swears by keeping things simple and not over-scheduling, I’ve somehow made things very complicated and over-scheduled. Lesson learned! Thankfully, things should taper off by mid-March – only two more weeks of crazy!

Here are a few things on my (crazy, scattered) mind this week:


1. This Instagram. I followed @hey_jules_studio months ago when I came across her lovely and colorful photos, but there have been very few postings since. She now has a book coming out, and this week, she started reposting her #100daysofrainbows. You know I love a good rainbow (I have a need to put almost everything in rainbow order – books, clothes, bobbins, produce), so I find her rainbow photos stunning and inspiring!

2. I have a new favorite radio station. Its tagline is “Throwback Hip Hop and R& B”. This is SO not my typical genre, but it WAS sort of my genre back in middle school and high school. Last night, as I driving through town, I tuned in and heard old Snoop Dogg, Boys II Men, and Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch. I could not stop smiling. There is something so great about hearing music you listened to when you were younger – memories of middle school dances and hanging out with friends and dance team numbers and CDs you played in your first car (in a Discman wired to your tape deck because you definitely DIDN’T drive a car with a built-in CD player).

(Side note: The song I heard by Boyz II Men was It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday. I called my brother immediately after hearing it because I remembered the time this dear, sweet brother, during his freshman year of college, told me that he wanted this song played at his funeral. I felt an immediate and intense need to verify if this was still true. I laughed so hard asking him I COULD BARELY BREATHE. He said he didn’t remember saying it, but he was sure that he did. I said that we all need reminders like this to keep us humble.)

4. Impress your kids. We spent some time last weekend making these World Record paper airplanes, and while they definitely weren’t perfect or anywhere near record-breaking, they were pretty awesome and flew really well.

Hope you have a lovely weekend! And tell me – what music immediately takes you back? In addition to “throwback hip hop”, early 90s country always makes me think of high school. I did grow up in East Tennessee, so country is kind of a given. What about you?

Five Things

Hello! Happy Friday!

Thanks for all the compliments on BB’s bed makeover. I was so happy with how it turned out – I am all about taking things that are broken and discarded and making them new again. (I’ve got a few more makeovers lined up in the coming weeks that I’m excited to share with you.) While I’m busy painting away, here are five things on my mind this week:

pumpkin1. Fall. It’s not really here yet (it was 97 degrees on Wednesday), but I can smell it in the air and feel it in the breeze. (Plus, Pumpkin Spice Lattes are back.) Fall is my most favorite time of year (and not just because it’s my birthday season). Candles, blankets, boots, pumpkins, cardigans, apple crisp, bonfires, falling leaves – all of it fills me with joy. This week, I caved and bought my first pumpkin of the year (from the dollar bin at Target), and it made me so happy. (Also, this made me laugh.)

Life is art.

2. This quote. It reminds me a lot of this Dani Shapiro quote I came across earlier in the year, and it made me think about life and art and practice and how they all overlap. I keep pondering how to bring the idea of practice more and more into my life and into the things I make.

3. Old-Fashioned Niceties That Deserve a Comeback. I think a lot of these fall under Helena Bonham Carter’s definition of art (#2 above) – helping people, writing a letter, thanking people. And I’ve really been trying to “Pretend There’s a Phone Cord” when I make a call – not checking email, not scrolling Facebook, not walking from room to room, picking up books or folding the laundry. It’s hard when you are used to multi-tasking on the phone, but it is so, so good to really listen.

4. Yoga. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a regular yoga practice, but I came across 30 Days of Yoga with Adriene this week. Confession: I have only done Day 1, but it was great, and she is completely adorable. I’m all about small ways to make changes, and doing videos at home is a simple, small change. (Also, I’m curious – do you have other suggestions for at-home workouts? Most days, I rotate between weights in my den, the elliptical in my garage, and walking in our neighborhood, but I’m always up for something new. I’d love to hear if you have something you love!)

5. This made me laugh (and was also kind of sweet).

What are you up to this weekend? We are looking forward to an outdoor movie night, a Cub Scout event, and lots of play time. I’m also hoping to finish this book that I mentioned a few weeks ago. (Remember how I was hoping it would be a good read aloud for the kiddos? Yeah, NO. It’s pretty scary. It gave me crazy dreams after the first couple of chapters. But I still can’t put it down.)
