Five Things

Happy Friday!

What a week it’s been! We started out the week with an extended 4-day weekend, and we extended THAT with 2 more sick days (started with BG, then me, then BB, then another  round with BG, and then to Husband today). So, in the midst of that, here are a few random things that have been on my mind:

1. There is Beauty in the Sick Days.

Sick days look like reheated coffee with 2% milk and driving to Trader Joe’s for cream and applesauce and hot dogs, because sick days also look like hot dogs and macaroni and cheese for lunch. They look like well-loved quilts on the couch and Cinderella on the DVD player. They look like PJs until noon, then sweatpants after that and digging through Pinterest for “kid projects” and building catapults out of spoons and rubber bands. They look like tea with honey (for me) and warm lemonade with honey (for the kids) and lollipops in the middle of the morning and reading Boxcar children as long as your voice will last. They look like throwing your agenda out and snuggling close and resting tired minds and bones.

And after a busy season of life, sick days can sometimes look like a small gift, and this time, my eyes were open to receive it.

2. House projects. Because the second Sick Day should be called “Getting Stuff Done Day”. The kids dug out old favorite toys and played for hours, taking breaks to help me decorate the mantel and unpack a box or two from our move (ahem, 15 months ago) and cleaning. BB was happy to see the return of his paper turkeys, “Ixtahboxtahbah” and “Oiksta the Turkey”, from three Thanksgivings ago. BG was happy that Allan (the new crow, and Edgar’s partner-in-crime) was staying around a little bit longer.

3. Red dresses. For some reason, I just keep pinning them – maybe because Christmas is coming? I don’t know. (I know, I definitely don’t NEED another red dress – I already have this and this and this and this.)

4. This quote.

5. Made me laugh. (I know, you’ve probably seen it before, but I saw it again this week, and I think I laughed more the second time. Maybe it’s the cold making me a little delirious, I don’t know.)

What are you up to this weekend? I see lots more resting and movies and a whole lot of nothing in our future this weekend. Hope whatever you’re doing, you are well and are taking the time to see the beauty in the everyday moments. Have a good weekend!

  1. So beautiful Nicole! I am sorry you guys have been sick, but you really captured the silver lining. I know there have been times when I claimed a sick day when what I really needed was a day keeping my kids close and the rest of the world far away :) I hope everyone is back to their old selves soon. And that last clip- oh my goodness!! So, so funny!! I love reading you Nicole- thanks for the nice start to my day :)

  2. Loved the new (to me) outlook on sick days. I hadn’t quite thought of it that way before. I can see why you’re attracted to those red dresses – they were very eye catching!
