This is a project that’s been a long time coming.
It started out with BB’s favorite shirt.
I think his Grams got him this shirt for his birthday when he turned 4 – so a year and a half ago. He LOVES this shirt. He wanted to wear it every day – it was always the first choice when it came out of the dryer. But, of course, he’s grown, and this shirt is more of a crop top. He still wants to wear it, but really, it’s not comfortable. So I told him a few months ago that I would turn it into a pillow. It would go nicely with his orange room and his race car bed.
Then, as it tends to go, life got busy, and I forgot about it until I was looking through my To-Do Pile for orange things. Finally, a colorful project for the house, not just for me!
I started by cutting the top and bottom off of the shirt. I realized that the design on the shirt doesn’t fit into a perfect square or rectangle, so I used my straight edge and rotary cutter to create a shape that cut off the sleeves but kept the entire design intact.
So it’s a trapezoid.
I found some orange felt pieces to use as the pillow. I pinned the t-shirt to one piece of felt and began sewing. That didn’t work so well, so I used fusible web to adhere the t-shirt to the felt. It wasn’t perfect, but it was better, so I went with it. Then I put the other piece of felt on top of the t-shirt and sewed along three sides.
I turned it right side out, filled the pillow with stuffing, and sewed the fourth side closed.
BB was thrilled when he saw it. “Is that my vroom shirt?! Did you make my pillow?!”
Unfortunately I wasn’t here for bedtime, but I just went to check, and he’s snuggled up with it, sound asleep.
I guess that means I need to find a colorful project for BG this month. Wonder what color it will be? ;)

Great idea! I’ve saved a few of my boy’s old shirts in hopes of making them something else. This would be an easy project. :-)
I’ve always liked the idea of making a quilt, but that’s a little too ambitious for me, at least for now. :)
Definitely one of your best ideas yet- and I agree that a quilt seems too ambitious, but this looks doable and charming :) You are a great mom to have done this for him!
Aww, thanks, Mary. He absolutely loves it, so it makes it completely worth it.
Love it!! And I’m really loving my earrings from your shop!
I’m so glad! And thanks!
