31 Days: Creative Habit – Day 8: Showing Up

I’ve been thinking a lot today about yesterday’s post, about ritual and about just “showing up”. I’ve been feeling a bit of a block – I can’t decide what I want to do, I’m not sure if my ideas will turn out, I’m afraid I don’t have enough time to do it well. (And I feel like I’m constantly behind schedule. It’s a self-imposed schedule, but it makes me feel late, and I hate being late.)

show up and get to work - chuck close

So today, after starting with my little ritual from yesterday, I just dug out some beads and got to work. I knew I wouldn’t finish today (I don’t have all the supplies I need), but I felt that if I got started, I would get inspired. And I did.

I found this necklace at a thrift store. I love working with funky old beads, turning simple strand necklaces into something a little bolder. These are royal blue and made of some sort of acrylic.

I want to use sterling silver with this shade of blue, but I love the vintage gold clasp, so I’ll save it for another project.

I took the necklace apart and played around with some different arrangements.

I have enough beads to make two necklaces. It makes me happy because it means I’ve already got a project for another day.

So then I just got to work.

This is as far as I could go with the supplies I have, but I already love it.

I’m starting to believe there is something to creating a habit – something about just doing the work. Today, it helped me push through a desire to procrastinate and helped me get started on something that I think will be lovely when it’s finished.
