Ride the Rails

Three-day weekends can be tough sometimes, can’t they? Or is that just us?


Don’t get me wrong – they are great. Three days with everyone home instead of the regular two. However, I think we get overly ambitious sometimes and just try to “get things done”. Or we think, Oh, we have three whole days to do all of our weekend chores, but then we get to the last day and cram everything in then. Or, we don’t plan anything, and it’s three really long days of trying to figure out what to do and not doing much of anything at all.

This weekend was different. We made a plan! We ran errands and had lunch out in another town on Saturday, which was fun. On Sunday, we spent lots of time walking, riding bikes, and playing at the park.


And then today, we took a train ride. It’s been several years since I’ve ridden the train. Husband and the Boy have taken the train to the Railroad Museum several times, but each time, I had plans or was VERY pregnant or had a newborn, so I missed out. Today, instead of heading to Sacramento, we headed West and landed in Suisun City.


It was a cute stop for a quick day trip. They have a waterfront area with little shops and restaurants.


I didn’t realize there would be a lighthouse. (I spent very little time researching our destination, obviously.)


And we found a really fun park with slides that both kids enjoyed and views of this cool building. (Husband says it’s City Hall. The Boy wanted to know if it was a new city hall or an old one. We’ve been reading Mike Mulligan if you couldn’t tell.)


Then we walked down along the marina and found a yummy little Greek place for lunch. (I’ve never met a dolma I didn’t like, and the souvlaki was great, too.)


I know I said I’m not really a resolutions kind of gal, but I did say (at least to Husband) that I’d like to get out of town more. Nothing big, probably just day trips, not even once a month – but maybe every other month, plan an excursion out of town. Because, while we live in a great place, there are lots of other great places around us, and because sometimes a change of scenery will cure what ails you, even if what ails you is just a three-day weekend.
